Day trip to the Schloss Hof in Marchfeld
Summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy
The Schloss Hof is located on an area of over 50 hectares. It consists of a residential building, beautiful terrace gardens, and a farm. It was designed in 1720 as a prestigious country estate and hunting lodge for Prince Eugene of Savoy. The architect, Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt, was allowed to build according to his own plans, with no restrictions placed upon him. Money was no object. Prince Eugene was one of the richest men of his time.
After 10 years, it was finally completed; an impressive overall work of art from the European Baroque. Empress Maria Theresia purchased the estate in 1755 from the heir of Prince Eugene and gave it to her husband as a gift. However, time doesn't stand still. After the end of the war, it was taken over by Russian occupying forces from 1945 to 1955. The palace was left to fall into decay. In 2002, an association for the preservation of the Schlosshof was established, and in 2005, it was restored and reopened to visitors. Always worth a visit; exceptionally beautiful.
