Day trip to Burgenland
On Vienna’s own “sea” - the Neusiedlersee
From Gablitz, you will travel via Vienna on the B16 to LAXENBURG CASTLE. Emperor Franz Josef lived here with his wife, Sissi, after their wedding. Today it serves as a recuperation center.
Your journey continues to EISENSTADT, the capital of Burgenland (a visit to the Kalvarienberg or 'Mount Calvary' and the mausoleum of Josef Haydn is definitely worthwhile), and on to ST. MARGARETEN (Roman quarry with open-air theater.) Every summer, opera festivals are held here, with the program for 2013 including "LA BOHEME".
Then head to Freistadt RUST with its famous rooftop stork nests and good wines. Then pay an interesting visit to MÖRBISCH with its distinctive lines of houses typical of Bürgenland.
From Mörbisch, you can travel by boat across the Neusiedlersee to ILLMNITZ.
Tip: a bike tour along the shores of the Neusiedlersee or a carriage ride into the bird sanctuary.
